Fuel and Fuel Storage

THE NO 1 FAILURE OF SMALL ENGINES IS GASOLINE RELATED
Engine performance depends on the care given to gasoline.
Please read and follow our advice.

GASOLINE STANDARDS

Since the EPA first established the minimum additive performance standards in 1995, most gasoline marketers have actually reduced the concentration level of detergent additive in their gasoline by up to 50%. As a result, the ability of an engine to maintain stringent Tier 2 emission standards have been hampered, leading to engine deposits which can have a big impact on in-use emissions and operator satisfaction. Currently, many gasoline retailers provide fuels with lower-quality additive packages that can build up deposits on fuel injectors and on intake valves.Others can build up deposits in combustion chambers and may lead to intake valve sticking. These lower levels of additives can have negative impacts on engine performance and responsiveness.

In as little as 30 days, gasoline begins to turn corrosive and its flash point or combustion declines. As deterioration continues, fine particles of debris, water and corrosion are left behind. Subsequently the engine may not start or run well. A complete fuel system overhaul, including carburetor replacement, may be required to fix a problem. Repairs may be costly.

TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline is the premier standard for gasoline performance. The intention of these standards is to create a winning situation for gasoline retailers, engine manufacturers and operators.Gasoline retailers must meet the high TOP TIER standards with all grades of gasoline at all outlets carrying the brand.

WHAT CAN BE DONE?

  • Use SUPER 92-94 octane Top Tier E10 gasoline for all small engines.

  • Do not use E15 gasoline, aviation fuels or race fuels.

  • 2 cycle engines: add high quality clean burning mix oil such as Stihl HP Ultra.

  • 4 cycle engines: add fuel stabilizer such as Star-Tron or Sea Foam.

  • Use an approved clean, plastic, sealed container such as No-Spill Gas Can.

  • Match gas can size to usage. Air space in can deteriorates gasoline more quickly.

  • Purchase no more than a 30 day supply of gasoline to ensure freshness.

  • Keep gas can & equipment in a cool dry location. Do not store in direct sunlight.

  • Excess fuel not used within 30 days can be added to car or truck fuel tank for quick consumption.

LIMITED USE & STORAGE OF EQUIPMENT

  • If engine will have limited or no use for 30 or more days, drain or run until gas tank is empty. Drained gasoline can be added to car or truck fuel tank for quick consumption.

  • Add appropriate 2 or 4 cycle ethanol free gasoline to empty gas tank. 2 cycle engine: Stihl MOTOMIX 4 cycle engine: VP SEF (Small Engine Fuel)

  • Start and run engine long enough for MOTOMIX or SEF to reach carburetor. (5 mins for small items up to 15 mins for large equipment.)

  • MOTOMIX & SEF will help protect fuel system from damage for up to 2 years.

  • Unopened full cans of SEF or MOTOMIX remain fresh for up to 5 years.
